Frederico Calhabeu
Director of Cell and Gene Therapies
Dr Frederico Calhabeu has over 20 years of experience in the fields of Stem Cell biology, Regenerative Medicine and Oncology, through positions in academia and industry.
Fred gained experience in leading different team sizes as well as leading early-stage and preclinical research programs to develop Regenerative Medicine and Anticancer therapeutics.
Fred completed his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Physiopathology at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris, France). He further held research positions at King’s College London (London, England) and at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia). During his academic career, Fred has taken a particular interest in developing innovative cell and gene therapies to treat common muscle disorders. As such, he used immune cells as cellular cargos to genetically treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and restore dystrophin expression, the cause of the disease.
Prior to joining BioCurate, Fred held the Acting position of Chief Translational Officer and Head of Pre-clinical studies at Cartherics, where he led a research team translating discoveries in immune cell therapies for cancer. In particular, he led the translational research of Cartherics’s lead “off-the-shelf” Natural Killer (NK) cell therapy product, demonstrating its pre-clinical safety and efficacy against ovarian cancer.
Aside from his passion for biomedical science, Fred is passionate about football (the real one) and is a very much people person, always up for a chat
